Alabaster and types of alabaster
Alabaster is a very valuable material quarried in egg-form from the suboil of Volterra and on its outskirts. The quarrying takes place in very old quarries already existing during the Etruscan time. Till few years ago quarrying still was hand–made using chisel and pick. Today they have been replaced by small mechanical excavators.
Very important is the natural transparency, that makes this material unique and exclusive in the stony manufacturing.
